Sonny

This is my five-year-old grandson, Sonny. He is one of the most delightful people I have ever met. He is kind, friendly, chatty, funny and very bright.
Sadly, he is currently in Great Ormond Street hospital in central London, one of the world's leading children's hospitals, having had a tumour removed and is now about to begin an agressive course of chemotherapy to defeat B-cell Lymphoma, a cancer of the blood.
Doctors are confident that he will make a full recovery but he faces a tough time ahead.
He is not expected to return to school for six months.
The most remarkable thing, to my mind is, the bravery of himself and his parents, my younger daughter Laura and son-in-law Lloyd. His Aunty Ruthie, my other daughter, gets over 70 responses to some of the update posts she puts on Facebook and she has started a Supporting Sonny through Lymphoma Group.
The huge network of support we have all received is overwhelming and I thank everone who has helped and sent good wishes.
I may be blogging a bit less in the short-term future.
We all love you Sonny!

bazza,
what a beautiful grandson you have... so much radiating out of his eyes and heart.

i am so glad to hear Sonny is in a top-notch hospital and will receive access to the best of care... and most of all i am grateful that he has the best medicine of all (in big doses), the love of his family... it is the love that brings us all through the darkest of times and renews our strength to keep forging through the darkest of times.

and now he has the hearts of a worldwide community to hold him close in our own hearts and good thoughts... in as much as we can from so far away we can now all walk down that long road with him (and with you) toward recovery.

big hug to Sonny and to you and your family.

Hi Bazza,

I can only imagine what you and your family are going through. You have my prayers, love and best wishes for your grandson's speedy recovery. Family, internal strength and positive support are quite amazing at times like these. I hope we in Blogville can give you such things. Take good care of yourself.

Wishing Sonny the very best during his period of treatment. It must be awful watching him go through this. The optimism of his doctors' sounds encouraging though, and how lucky Sonny is to have a strong, brave family around him. x

Thankfully children are brave and resilient, Bazza. It’s usually the families who suffer more than the child.

Thinking of you, and praying.

Thanks everybody. I wasn't going to post this but I knew there would be many words of wisdom and encouragement - and I was right!
My daughter has read your comments and they made her feel happy to read them. Thanks again.
I will post about Sonny again but not all of the time.

Bazza, this is a sad situation you find yourselves in as a family. Sonny is a lucky boy to have a grandfather like you. He sounds wonderfully brave. At least he is in a leading hospital where the best of care will be taken. I'm glad to hear his prognosis is positive but no doubt it will be a long road.

Your blogger friends understand if you blog less. You need to be there for Sonny and Laura, Lloyd and Ruthie.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. I hope Great Ormand Street does a big Christmas for their children!

Oh goodness...what to say? This is unnatural. Children should take care of their parents and grandparents, not vice versa.

Your grandson is one handsome little boy and I can see the light shining in his eyes. He has a great spirit.

He is a lucky little boy to have such wonderful family who is there for him. My prayers and thoughts are with you, your grandson, and your family. May he make a full recovery and soon you will all feel that this was just a horrible nightmare.

I hope your grandson is able to battle this form of cancer successfully. He looks and sounds like he is a great kid. I can see why you would want to do less blogging for a bit to be with him and offer your love and support. As someone who has had so many relatives that have had cancer and gone through chemo, I know it's going to be a struggle for him and for the entire family.

I offer my heartfelt good wishes for him, my friend.

Most inspiring and I send my positive wishes to Sonny and your family.

Ruthie, thank you for doing that.
Luv, Daddy!

Kelly and Gary (Klahanie): You guys are great. Thank you so much for your heartfelt response. As Ruthie has said, the group is now open to all.

What a brave little boy. He has a lot of love around him and a twinkle in his eyes. Such a cutie-pie. I can't imagine this, really, I can't.

Even at his worst moments the twinkle never left his eyes!
