Van Morrison: Sweet Thing

http://www.last.fm/
Sweet Thing
(Click on the above to listen. Open another window if you want to listen and follow the lyrics!))
And I will stroll the merry way
And jump the hedges first
And I will drink the clear
Clean water for to quench my thirst
And I shall watch the ferry-boats
And they'll get high
On a bluer ocean
Against tomorrow's sky
And I will never grow so old again
And I will walk and talk
In gardens all wet with rain
Oh sweet thing, sweet thing
My, my, my, my, my sweet thing

And I shall drive my chariot
Down your streets and cry
'Hey, it's me, I'm dynamite
And I don't know why'
And you shall take me strongly
In your arms again
And I will not remember
That I ever felt the pain.
We shall walk and talk
In gardens all misty and wet with rain
And I will never, never, never
Grow so old again.
Oh sweet thing, sweet thing
My, my, my, my, my sweet thing

And I will raise my hand up
Into the night time sky
And count the stars
That's shining in your eye
Just to dig it all an' not to wonder
That's just fine
And I'll be satisfied
Not to read in between the lines
And we will walk and talk
In gardens all wet with rain
And I will never, ever, ever, ever
Grow so old again.
Oh sweet thing, sweet thing
Sugar-baby with your champagne eyes
And your saint-like smile....

Van Morrison has a reputation as a grumpy old curmudgeon but with a body of work like he has nobody could seriously doubt his commitment to his art. Ever the contrary one, he say's 'it's just a job'! If you still doubt my word listen to 'Into The Mystic'.

Hi Madelaine. Interesting that you say that because it's actually a lyric. Click on the 'Sweet Thing' title and hear the song if you didn't yet.

Groovy baby! I was carried away for a while there Bazza! Good choice.

Sometimes Sir Tom I think the day will come when you will be carried away. Or maybe you already have been?

Dear bazza,
It just so happens that "Van the Man" is undoubtedly one of my musical heroes. I believe this song comes from the album, "Moondance", and I was first introduced to his music through the film "An American Werewolf in London", in which they play "Moondance" to the shower scene with a young Jenny Agutter in it (an added bonus!). I also remember very clearly first hearing "Gloria" by Van and his band "Them" and was blown away by it.
Thanks, bazza, for bringing back some fond memories.
Yours with Very Best Wishes,
David.

Hi David. I didn't remember it being in An American Werewolf in London (great film, by the way).
I think you'll find that Sweet Thing is from Astral Weeks but Into The Mystic is from Moondance. All good stuff.

Hi Bazza,
Due to the wonders of high technology, I get to listen to Van Morrison's "Sweet Thing" while I type out this comment. I agree with you that he was only a curmudgeon in the most cynical sense of the word...Perhaps, he was actually a realist with a romantic heart. Hard to say, but it's a sweet thing that you posted this. Thanks Bazza.

Hi bazza,
Excellent! Whoops, an exclamation mark!
Van Morrison is one of my all time favourite singers. Changed quite a bit since the days of 'Gloria' and 'Them'.
Must go now and listen to the lion...
Cheers, Gary:-)

Cool song. I'll have to listen to the other song you suggested, as well. I've never read listened to his music until now. At least, not knowingly. Thanks for the introduction.

Snee: Yeah, the technology is great isn't it? I have Spotify on my desktop and can listen to millions of tunes free while I work on the computer. I'll blog about it one day.

Gary: Somehow I knew you would be a 'Van the Man' fan. (Thank you Stan, plan a flan, man).Gloria is a great song and there's a terrific version by Patty Smith.

Kelly: There's a wonderful back catalogue of his work around. It's easy to get addicted. Hope you enjoyed it.

How lovely.

Hi Mimi, we've been like strangers! Congratulations on another successful Peace Globe Blog.
It's unusual for song lyrics to read like good poetry although it does in this case but make sure you listen to the wonderful recording if you haven't done so yet.

Great song!

Thanks for this. I just love Van Morrison, especially when the world gets a bit mad and hectic. His voice makes me feel much more mellow and chilled out.

He wrote so many brilliant songs, but the album I've probably played the most is Irish Heartbeat.

bazza said...

Kate: I'm glad you like it. Did you listen to the second song linked at the end of the post?
That's a great one as well!

Joanne: I only know the title track and Carrickfergus from Irish Heartbeat. I must make sure to hear it all because I really enjoy most Irish music.

joanne fox said...

Then I definitely think you'd like Irish Heartbeat. (It's with The Chieftains.)

I wonder if Van will honour us by popping in to comment on this post?!

bazza said...

Joanne: I will make sure I hear it all. I would regard the chances of a visit from Van and a comment as, shall we say, 'remote'!

Van the Man said...

Ye don't know what you're saying so-called 'Bazza'. Ye don't understand my music at all, so y'don't.

bazza said...

Is that you Sir Tom?
Because it sure aint Van!

i wanted to comment first before i clicked over to listen, because what usually happens with your links is a sweeping away into some other wonderful distraction of a world.

very thought provoking lyrics, and i'm really grooving on the word groovy provided by the Sensational Tom Eagerly :)

bazza said...

Hi Joanne: I wanted to be able to get the link to open in a new window so that readers could follow the wonderful lyrics and listen to the music at the same time but I couldn't do it. As one of my technical advisers do you know how to do that?!
I think the groovy Sir Tom must be a child of the sixties.
Oh do behave!

He may be a grumpy curmudgeon, but my god, what a voice he has. The perfect accompaniment to a cold winter's night.
