New Portraits Quiz ANSWERS

Here are the answers to last weeks portraits quiz.
Rosa Parks was, of course famous as a civil rights activist who moved forward her cause by insisting on keeping her seat on a segregated bus. Alan Turing was the English scientist who kicked off the computer revolution and solved the Enigma Machine problem. He was gay at a time when that was illegal in Great Britain. He took his own life and a poisoned apple with a bite taken out of it was found next to his bed. Steve Jobs always denied that it was the original of Apple's Trademark. I'm not convinced.  Machiavelli has lent his name to an adjective which reflects poorly on his true worth as an adviser to princes and politicians. Marie Curie was a double Nobel Prize winner (in different disciplines). She was the first person to achieve this; there have been three others since.
Paul McCartney is a former Beatle. Emily Dickinson, born in Massachusetts in 1830, was hardly recognised for her poetry during her lifetime. JRR Tolkien was the author of The Lord of the Rings, beloved reading for every schoolboy. Richard Feynman was the quantum physicist who led the enquiry into the Challenger disaster and a wonderful popular promoter of science. He once said, "If you think you understand quantum theory then you don't understand quantum theory".
Maya Angelou was the author of I know Why the Caged Bird Sings, a touching autobiography of her childhoodKaty Perry is a singer-songwriter famous for I Kissed a Girl. Franz Kafka was a deeply troubled Czech writer and Bryan Cranston is pictured five years before he began making Breaking Bad.

As previously, David is the clear winner but most people got at least some right! This was a deliberately difficult quiz (because that's the best kind) but I find it interesting to see the face of someone whose name is better known than their countenance.
There are no prizes but David gets the Kudos, worth so much more than cash don't you think?

The only one I absolutely did know but forgot was Franz Kafka. *Sigh* middle age is a shocker :( Imagine an art historian who is starting to forget visual information.

Hels: Tell me about it! I forget everyday words in the middle of a sentence and don't ask how many times I go into another room and forget why I went in there! I pathetically retrace my steps much to Leah's amusement. It doesn't work.
I don't think Machiavelli looks like he did in my imagination!
Ah well, unusually we are 'enjoying' heavy snow fall in London today.

Hi bazza,
So, I win once again, and a secret, villainous smile issues forth from the corner of my mouth!
As before, I suppose I should thank a few people who've helped me along the way. Firstly, my parents (for producing such a singular talent as my good self); second, God (for blessing me with such innate intelligence and ability); and finally, myself, without whom all this would be impossible!
If only, bazza, I was as good at life as I seem to be at quizzes! Still, as you say, maybe its just the kudos that matters.
Best Wishes,
David.

Hello Bazza, I forgot to write in again. Machiavelli and Dickinson I probably would have guessed, and perhaps Maya Angelou. The others I know of but was not familiar with their faces, at least as in the photos you gave us. Perry and Cranston I have never heard of--they must be British celebrities.

Jim: Katie Perry is a USA singer, possibly one of a thousand clones (that may be unfair, I don't know!). Bryan Cranston was the lead actor in the phenomenally successful and brilliant five-season US TV series Breaking Bad. Of course I did tend to use the more obscure photos!

I recognized the face as someone I knew but Bryan Cranston with red hair threw me off. The picture of the wonderful Maya Angelou is not one I have seen. I guess I could only picture her in my mind in her later years. Sadly I only got two, Paul McCartney, because his face and eyes changed little during the years and Katie Perry because she is current and always in the media.

This test is so much easier with their names written beneath.

Arleen: I suppose I could have given the answers to begin with; that would have saved a lot of trouble! I find with the Bryan Cranston picture as soon as you know it seems obvious who it is. I will start work on my next evil quiz later on.....

Hi Bazza - I certainly enjoyed the quiz - though failed dismally. Yet it's the kind of quiz that lingers - also one gets to be reminded of people who perhaps are not at the forefront of one's mind - yet we should know. Loved it ... flunked at it though .. cheers Hilary

Hilary: Your reaction is exactly what I was aiming for! I didn't expect too many answers, it's just that I publish what interests me, so I'm pleased if anyone else likes it.

I couldn't even recognize Katie Perry with her hair like that! I got the 3 right that I guessed on. I can definitely tell that was Paul McCartney!

Lots of surprises here! Thanks.

I never would've guessed that was Machiavelli... he looks so... nice. :)

bazza said...

Susan: Machiavelli? Yes I understand he was good to his mother.....
But, seriously, he has been misrepresented by history!

bazza said...

Sherry: I'm nit sure I would have got McCartney - it's easy when someone tells you! Katy Perry has many look-a-likes but I might have got her. I suppose you can claim 100% accuracy.....
