Painting of the Month Sept 2012: Cezanne

Paul Cezanne painted Mont Saint-Victoire, in Provence, more than 60 times and found something new to say about it on every occasion. Although the four examples above are quite different from each other they are all instantly recognised as being by this greatest of modern artists. Please just enjoy them - you don't need to know anything else about the paintings. Long-time readers of this Blog may notice that Cezanne has featured in my Painting of the Month series several times before and so has Mont Saint-Victoire; obviously I can't get enough of it!
You can see some more versions here.

I have been to a few shows at the Philadelphia Museum of Art showing the works of Cezanne. They are always wonderful exhibits.

I never get tired of Cezanne. I still remember the first time I was exposed to his work, in an art class in high school. I was amazed and have been a fan ever since.

I like these paintings. The style in which they are painted makes them interesting. I'm an artist myself but I could never paint like that. Thanks for posting them.

Hi Bazza,
Amazing that these paintings are all by the same artist, what a repertoire! I am always amazed how artists can return to a place or object and see it completely differently! I saw a programme about David Hockney a little while ago and he does the same, mind blowing!

SO,AC: They always please!

Alicia: Similar to my own experience. I find the qualities of his work to be very enduring.

Lost in Space: I doubt if any artist could paint that way. It's no shame!

John: It's a wonderful ability to have but very rare!

Hmmm. I dislike being negative (tee hee) but I don't really care for these paintings. To each his or her own, though. The style, to me, is murky and too messy.

In any case, though, I hope your weekend is going along great. Always interesting to stop and see what you've got cooking here, Bazza.

I've always been partial to the first of your samples. Squint your eyes and you'll see the elephants. I know, bazza...

Kezza: No need to apologize! It wouldn't do if everyone had the same taste. This blog is just (usually) my own likes - all points of view are valid and sometimes more interesting. It's always good to hear from you. I am having a great weekend and hope you are too. I took my twin grandsons to the Paralympics yesterday and they loved it.

Dixie: OMG! You've opened my eyes (or, to be more precise, half-closed them) to something I never saw before. I won't be able to see that painting in the same way again!

Hey bazza,
I'm really delighted you put up some of these classic works of art from Cezanne. I share your admiration for his work.
Take care,
Gary

AC: Don't panic! I'd had a few drinks and didn't understand what you were saying and didn't mean to be rude! :)
