My Heroes (29): Madeleine Peyroux

I think Madelaine Peyroux is a jazz and blues singer who tends to divide opinion. She obviously sounds like Billy Holiday; some say she is just a pale imitation but I think she a genuine article. Listen to her singing Careless Love and judge for yourself.
She grew up in Brooklyn, New York but by the age of sixteen she was singing for her supper in Paris and toured around Europe honing her craft and living by 'passing the hat'. Among her influences she cites Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Edith Piaf, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan.
I really like her version of Dylan's You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go. She also covered Cohen's 'Dance Me To The End Of Time'.
If she is an 'acquired taste' then I have that taste and I like it!

I prefer Dylan's version of his song....both his singing and also the accompaniment.

It was interesting to listen though....a rather cool style.

Dear bazza,
Very much like Billie Holiday, and I have to say I prefer Holiday's voice. Still a good listen, though, bazza. Keep them coming!
Yours with Very Best Wishes,
David.

Kathy: Thanks for the visit, you have no need to apologise!

Rob: I too prefer Dylan's version but it's a sign of a good song - that other versions can be appealing as well.

David: You are always so polite! It's a rare quality these days.

Joanne: My pleasure, I'm glad you liked it.

Hi bazza,
I have been away from blogland but thought it would be nice to come over for a visit.
I am vaguely familiar with her music but, just like my polite friend, David, I prefer Billie Holiday.
Have a peaceful weekend. With respect and kindness, Gary.

Hi Bazza,
I thought I had dropped you a line on this post, but apparently I must have just dropped the ball. I enjoyed listening to Madeleine Peyroux quite a bit. But I was especially excited to find an old Odetta recording that I sang to my girls when they were little. Great fun! Have a good weekend!

Gary: I too prefer Billie Holiday but Madeleine is young and still with us! There is plenty of room I think for new singers below her very high standard; lets face it, most singers are below that peak.
Welcome back to blogland!

Snee: Yes, I noticed Odette in the sidebar at YouTube. I downloaded Spotify and have about 2,000 songs avaiable from my desktop for free including dozens of Madeleine's songs. Thanks for the visit.

I say bazza you sly old devil. She's a delicious young chick so I don't think you're in her league.
Don't happen to have her phone number do you? I think I may have something she migjht be interested in. (Sir Tom winks in a conspitorial manner).

I'm loving the music, Bazza. Thanks for the introduction to Maydelaine Peyroux music. I love jazz!

Thank you also for the lovely comments you've left at my site. I really appreciated that. =)

And I'm going to download Peyroux version of You're gonna make me lonesome when you go. Amazing music.

Have a wonderful day. :)

Sir Tom: You are still a rascal sir. Somehow you are able to use just enough charm to get away with it!

Shanaz: Hi, I am always happy when one of my posts creates a new fan of something or someone. I do enjoy visiting your blog even if I don't always comment!
